When Disaster Strikes: Fire Safety Responsibilities for Multi-Residential Property Managers

Property managers of multi-family residential complexes play a critical role in maintaining fire and life safety for their residents. This session will provide a practical overview of key responsibilities under the Ontario Fire Code, including the importance of maintaining compliant Fire Safety Plans, understanding new carbon monoxide alarm requirements, and recognizing emerging risks such as black market or non-compliant devices being used by tenants. Attendees will also gain insight into what to expect when a fire occurs in a tenant’s unit, including the response process, documentation, communication with fire services, and the property manager’s role before, during, and after the incident. Designed specifically for those managing residential properties, this session will help property managers better understand their obligations, reduce risk, and support safer housing communities.
